The Claddagh legend
According to legend, an Irish fisherman was kidnapped by Algerian pirates and sold into slavery. He was servant to an Arabian goldsmith who taught him this craftmanship. He promised to free him when his masterpiece would be of outstanding beauty. So the fisherman crafted a ring, that is now known as Claddagh ring. He indeed was freed and returned to Ireland to marry his love.
